The first topic I choose to learn more about in Part 5 Guidelines for grammar, style, and punctuation was the semicolon. I choose the semicolon because ever since middle school, I have been unsure when to use it properly. I read on this page that a semicolon links independent clauses or separate items in a series. I was interested to find out that the semicolon indicates a pause longer than that take for a comma but not as long as that taken for a period.

The second topic I chose was from he commonly confused words list, affect and effect. I choose affect and effect because I always get mixed up when using those two words in a paper and never know which one is appropriate. I learnt affect is a verb meaning to influence and effects a noun meaning the result of some influence.

The third topic I learned about was a dash. I never have known how to use a dash properly in a paper, I have seen a lot of dashes in books that I have read but have not been able to understand their purpose. A dash is less formal than a colon, and is used to give emphasis or clarity to extra information in a sentence.

The last topic I chose to learn about was italics and underlining. The reason I chose italics and underlining is because I have always been confused on when to use which. I know that it will benefit me in the future to understand how to use what.
