Chapter 4
Digital and Social Media
The websites I examined that make competing claims about a controversial topic are the Huffington post and the Corn refiners association. The Huffington post says that high fructose corn syrup is bad for you, and Corn refiners association says the opposite. The Huffington post has five reasons that explains why high fructose corn syrup is bad for you, they say that sugar in any form causes obesity and disease when consumed in pharmacologic doses, HFCS and cane sugar are NOT biochemically identical or processed the same way by the bod, HFCS contains contaminants including mercury that are not regulated or measured by the FDA, many independent medical and nutrition experts DO NOT support the use of HFCS in our diet, despite the assertions of the corn industry, and HCFS is almost always a marker of poor-quality, nutrient-poor disease creating industrial food products or “food-like substances." The Corn refiners association tries to deflect these reasons for why HFCS is bad for you by calling HFCS a natural corn sugar. There is an obvious conflict of interest with the Corn refiners association and them endorsing HFCS, because of course they want people to buy they product.
