DD6HW2 Chapter 8
I am doing my sources of distortion post on Donald Trump. The bullet points that I am choosing to write about are misinterpreted statistic and hasty generalization. Donald Trump has said many statistics in his speeches that are incorrect. Just a couple examples of these misinterpreted statistics are, he said the "real" unemployment rate is "anywhere from 18 to 20%" and "maybe even 21%." I see no factual basis for this opinion. He also said he would have blocked new Ford plants in Mexico by threatening to impose a 35% tax on vehicles and parts made in Mexico and shipped to the U.S. However, only Congress is able to impose taxes and such a tax as this would actually violate the North American Free Trade Agreement. He also is guilty have several hasty generalizations. Trump made a misleading claim about health care premium, he said that, "costs are going for people up 29, 39, 49, and even 55%." He is talking about the proposed rate increases for 2016 for some plans on the individual market. It is unclear whether this increase will be approved by state insurance regulators or not. And some other plans have proposed decreases in rates. The Affordable Care Act requires insurers to submit any proposed rate increase that is above 10% for individual and small group market plans to state and federal regulators for review. It is also true that insurers have to publicly say the proposed increases and explain why they are necessary.
